eEye’s Research Team To Conduct Monthly Webcasts To Help Organizations Better Understand New Vulnerabilities And How It Will Impact Enterprise Network Security.
(ALISO VIEJO, CA) January 27, 2004 eEye Digital Security, a leading provider of network security software, has released a free scanning tool to detect this rapidly spreading email virus. The virus – called "Mydoom," "Novarg" or "WORM_MIMAIL.R" — has been propagating via email and infecting unsuspecting recipients.
This mass-mailing virus selects targets from a list of email subjects, message bodies, and attachment file names to exploit unsuspecting email recipients. The virus, once executed, spoofs the sender name of its messages so that it appears to have been sent by different users instead of the actual users of the infected machines. Upon infecting a computer, the worm will set up a backdoor into the system by opening TCP ports 3127 through 3198, resulting in a vulnerability which could allow an attacker to connect to the computer and gain access to its network resources. The backdoor could also allow for the download and execution of arbitrary files. This virus effects users of the following Microsoft operating systems; Windows® 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, and XP.
“It is absolutely imperative that administrators scan their networks and identify infected machines workstations and take corrective actions,” said Firas Raouf, chief operating officer at eEye Digital Security. “Users of eEye’s Retina Network Security Scanner can identify this vulnerability and take the proper steps to remediate.”
eEye is offering a free scanning utility that scans network machines and detects if any have been infected by the worm, allowing administrators to quickly target machines which need to be disinfected. The Retina® MyDoom Scanner is based on eEye's award-winning network security scanner Retina®, which proactively guards against vulnerabilities by regularly assessing the integrity of enterprise networks to uncover and fix potential security weaknesses — before they result in lost productivity or business discontinuity. While the free tool allows for quick scanning by searching for this particular infection, Retina detects over one thousand vulnerabilities to provide ongoing, comprehensive security audits for any network. Utilities with disinfection capabilities are also available for purchase.
