eEye Introduces Blink® Personal—The World’s Most Powerful Consumer Security Software—for Free

Leading enterprise security vendor combines the most powerful protection technologies into a single, unobtrusive agent and connects users into a digital Neighborhood Watch program

(ALISO VIEJO, CA) October 23, 2006 — eEye Digital Security®, the leading developer of endpoint security and vulnerability management software solutions, as well as the industry’s foremost contributor to security research and education, today announced the release of Blink® Personal, a free version of its award-winning Blink endpoint security technology, developed for non-commercial users. Blink Personal is the first free security product available to consumers to combine multiple layers of technology that protect against identity theft, worms, trojan horses and other attack methods hackers use, into a single agent that is unobtrusive, integrated and deeply-layered with security functionality.

"I've tried using Norton and ZoneAlarm, but they are like bouncers at the door; hackers are still able to find ways to sneak in and compromise my system,” said J.J. Gertler, a consumer from Virginia. “Blink makes my whole computer invisible to malicious attacks."

Deployed as a software agent on a Windows-based desktop PC or laptop, Blink Personal leverages multiple layers of protection—more so than any other endpoint security product—to shield individual digital assets from attacks and keep systems up and running. Blink Personal not only delivers the industry’s most comprehensive endpoint security for the attacks that are affecting users today, it unifies this functionality in order to reduce the memory and computing resources necessary to support the agent.

Blink Personal combines the following technologies into an integrated solution:

  • Protocol-based Intrusion Prevention System –stops both known and unknown attacks from ever reaching the operating system, effectively repelling hackers.
  • Application Protection – prevents buffer overflow attacks from passing control of a system to an external agent or crashing a system in a denial of service attack
  • System Firewall – protects inbound and outbound port access
  • Application Firewall – determines which protocols can talk to specific applications
  • Anti-Phishing Protection – warns of fraudulent links and URLs
  • Retina® Local Agent – for periodic assessment of all local system vulnerabilities and how to remediate them
  • System Control – controls which applications can execute on the system and whether removable storage devices, such as USB drives, can be used

“The past year has shown us that the nature of security has changed, from annoying viruses and spyware as the predominate threats, to hackers gaining access to your system and installing keyloggers, trojan horses or other tools to gain access to your personal data”, said Marc Maiffret, eEye Digital Security’s CTO and Chief Hacking Officer. “With Blink Personal, you have a product that has effectively repelled every remote hacker attack since its launch in an easy-to-use, unobtrusive format.”

Blink Personal also incorporates a Neighborhood Watch program, a free service where users can choose to send anonymous attack data to eEye’s industry leading Research Team without any disruption to the user, creating a wide sensor net for new attacks and zero-day events. This feature allows consumers, on an optional basis, to participate in creating the internet’s largest attack sensor web. Each installation of Blink Personal blocks attacks and sends the attack data anonymously to eEye’s Research Lab, where it can be analyzed to see if the attack is an existing, known attack, a variant on a known attack or a new attack, increasing the security for all other users.

“Neighborhood Watch brings the power of massively distributed systems, each using the Internet in different ways and being attacked in different ways, to increase the overall awareness and protection of the users in the program,” said Ross Brown, eEye’s CEO. “With Neighborhood Watch, the visibility of attacks reaches new levels that traditional honeypot technologies can’t reach, as those systems are optimized for capturing self-replicating malware and attacks, like worms and viruses, not socially-engineered phishing attacks or hacking attempts.

“Blink Personal is a perfect fit for users who are tired of having to manage a plethora of agents, each one designed to stop one type of attack and not others,” he continued. “By integrating these products into a single, free agent, users are able to manage their environments in a simpler, more intuitive and complete way, without constantly being interrupted by the security product. With Neighborhood Watch, users are participating in building better security tools without being interrupted, all the while getting a great security tool, for free.”

For those interested in protecting themselves with Blink Personal, the free product is available for download on eEye's Website: http://www.eeye.com/html/products/blink/personal/index.html.
