eEye Alerts Businesses to Verify that Daylight Savings Patches Are in Place

Recent Changes in Daylight Savings Time May Result in Business Resources Loss of Synchronization

(ALISO VIEJO, CA) October 29, 2007 — eEye Digital Security®, a leading developer of unified client security and vulnerability management tools, wants to advise IT managers of the need to apply updates to correspond with the new daylight savings time (DST) end date of 2:00 AM November 4th, 2007. IT managers need to apply updates to their computer networks, or their time zone settings may be incorrect during this four-week period, causing employees to miss critical deadlines or events.

Beginning in 2007, daylight savings time (DST) was extended in the United States. DST which began on March 11, 2007 and will end on November 4, 2007 represents a start date three weeks earlier, and an end date one week later, than in previous years. The result being that the DST period is now four weeks longer than it used to be.

IT Managers need to verify that their DST patches are in place in order to make sure business resources are properly synchronized. Laptops, desktops, and servers should all be patched to account for this system-level change. IT departments and organizations can verify that DST patches are in place using eEye’s Retina® Network Security Scanner to:

- keep backups running
- keep appointments in synch
- make sure scheduled activities occur on time
- audit laptops, desktops, and servers: Windows XP SP2, Windows XP x64, Windows 2003, and Windows 2003 x64
- enable the following Retina audit: 5708 - Daylight Saving Time Update For Windows Not Installed (KB933360)
- use REM to report on patch implementation status and to resolve exceptions

“The problem that many companies could find themselves facing is that the Daylight Savings Time issue may be under the radar and therefore not accounted for by their IT department,” said Andre Protas, Director of eEye Research and Preview Services. “It seems like an innocuous change, but the effects can be problematic if not properly addressed.”

Retina detects and identifies known and recently identified network security vulnerabilities and assists in prioritizing the threats for remediation. The award-winning vulnerability management scanner is capable of scanning an entire Class C network of devices, operating systems and applications in approximately 15 minutes. Once the scope of the network is analyzed, the scanner pinpoints vulnerabilities, policy exceptions and operating system, application, and configuration flaws. With Retina’s speed, accuracy and non-intrusive scanning, the most complex computing environments can be secured against the most recent of discovered vulnerabilities, such as the need for a Daylight Savings Time patch.

Users can also leverage Retina for security risk assessment, project risk management and for enforcing standards-based registry settings through custom policy audits. Retina is considered the easiest scanner to use since the majority of its scans can be conducted remotely without administrator rights. This also makes it the most cost-effective scanner available (less than $18 per scanned IP address).

In addition to its vulnerability and risk management capabilities, Retina helps businesses identify and simplify their corporate and regulatory requirements. Retina implements policy-driven scans enabling internal security audits and ensuring configuration requirements are enforced. Custom scans help organizations comply with pertinent regulatory requirements, such as SOX, HIPAA, GLBA, PCI and others
